Your Year-End Tax Document Checklist

Showing up to your tax appointment with everything in hand is the easiest way to save time, money, and frustration. Start gathering now so you’re not hunting for paperwork in January.

Income records

  • Sales and revenue reports

  • 1099s you receive from clients or payment platforms

  • Any other business income, like interest or side income

Expense records

  • Receipts and invoices for business purchases

  • Vehicle mileage log

  • Home office details, if you use one

  • Insurance, rent, and utilities

Payroll records (if you have employees)

  • Payroll reports and quarterly filings

  • Year-end wage summaries

Big purchases and sales

  • Equipment, vehicles, or property you bought or sold this year

  • Loan statements and interest paid

Estimated tax payments

  • Dates and amounts of every payment you made this year

Personal items that affect your return

  • Retirement and health savings contributions

  • Mortgage interest and property tax statements

  • Charitable donation receipts

  • Last year’s return, for reference

Pro tip: Make one folder, digital or physical, and drop things in as they arrive. Waiting for a stray document is the number one reason returns get delayed.
